Business Water Bills: Compare Costs Before You Switch
Looking for the best business water supplier or wondering whether switching could reduce your water bill?
Start with two questions: can this premises switch, and which part of the bill would change? Water retail competition has different rules from business electricity and gas, including important geographical restrictions.
Can my business switch water supplier?
In England and Wales, eligibility depends partly on whether the premises are supplied through a wholesaler whose system is wholly or mainly in England or Wales—not simply the postal address.1
| Supply area | Starting position |
|---|---|
| England-area supply | Eligible premises used primarily for business can generally choose a water and wastewater retailer.1 |
| Scotland | Businesses can choose between licensed providers; the Water Industry Commission for Scotland publishes customer guidance.2 |
| Wales-area supply | Retail choice is restricted: the threshold is at least 50 million litres of water a year at the premises, and the competitive route concerns water rather than the equivalent wastewater retail choice.1 |
| Northern Ireland | Businesses cannot choose another water supplier; the supplier is Northern Ireland Water.3 |
Have the retailer confirm eligibility for the actual premises. Do not assume that all sites in a multi-site business have identical options.
What changes when I switch water retailer?
Compare the retailer's price and service, including billing, account support and any agreed additional help. A retail switch does not simply replace the underlying wholesaler's published charges with an entirely different set of network costs.4
This makes the scope of an advertised saving important. Ask whether the percentage applies to the whole bill, the retail component or only a particular service.
A retail discount is not always a whole-bill discount
For illustration, suppose a £1,000 annual bill contains a £100 retail component. A 10% reduction in that component saves £10, which is 1% of the total bill—not 10%.
Those figures are illustrative, not typical industry charges. The principle is to apply the claimed percentage to the correct part of the bill, then compare the complete annual amounts.
How should I compare business water bills?
Give each retailer the same recent bills and usage assumptions. Ask for a written annual-cost comparison that identifies water, wastewater, standing charges and any other applicable items.
Also compare the contract term, any minimum charges, payment requirements and extra fees. Have unexplained differences in metered volumes or site details clarified rather than assuming that a lower-looking quote corrects an existing billing problem.
Your existing bill and supply-point information can help the incoming retailer identify the premises. A Supply Point ID (SPID) is useful, although Open Water explains that you do not need to know it before starting an enquiry.5
Is using a broker necessary?
No. You can approach retailers directly, or consider an intermediary where useful. Ask how any intermediary is paid and include that cost in the comparison. The official Open Water service provides switching information for eligible premises in England and Wales; Scottish customers can use the guidance from the Water Industry Commission for Scotland.52
Check the right bill with the right service
This article is general business-water guidance. Openlight's current online bill checker assesses business electricity, not water bills. Do not upload a water bill expecting an automated water audit or a water-switching quotation.
For electricity costs, start with a check of your existing bill or a comparison of your next contract.
